On February 26, 2010, Representative Rush Holt (D-NJ) introduced H.R. 4710: The Farm to School Improvements Act of 2010; and, not far behind, Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) introduced S. 3123: Growing Farm to School Programs Act of 2010 on March 16, 2010. Both bills amend the National School Lunch Act to require the Secretary of Agriculture to carry out a program to implement farm to school programs through grants and technical assistance. Jefferson County Farm to Schools Coalition is a community-based group working to improve the nutritional value of food served in Jefferson County schools.
- » To educate students, their families, school staff and community members of the importance of childhood nutrition.
- » To advocate for fresh, whole and seasonal foods in place of highly processed ones.
- » To support the school board and administrators, food service providers and farmers, and to overcome barriers to buying and serving local and regionally grown foods.
- » To assist in making school gardening projects successful.
